Men’s Hockey Beats Southern Maine 4-2

PAWTUCKET, RI – Looking to keep in the hunt for a playoff spot, the Johnson & Wales University men's ice hockey team came up with a big victory on Saturday. The Wildcats defeated Southern Maine, 4-2.

Southern Maine: 3-13-3, 3-9-1 NEHC
Johnson & Wales: 4-12-3, 2-7-2 NEHC

USM: Anthony D'Alosio (L, 1-5-1) 24 Saves
JWU: Mike Rockwell (W, 2-8-3) 25 Saves

Of Note:
JWU got on the board first when Matt Bernot skated into the USM zone and fired a wrist shot from just inside the blue line that got past USM keeper Anthony D'Alosio.

The Wildcats went up 2-0 when Austin Withycombe scored his second goal in as many games. Trevor Momot put the puck on net and after Connor Bechtel's shot didn't go in, Withycombe was there to jam home the rebound.

Southern Maine scored late in the first period then again in the second to tie the game at 2-2 on a pair of long-range shots.

JWU grabbed a 3-2 lead just 70 seconds into the third period. Icing put the puck in the Southern Maine zone and Chad Guderian put back the rebound of Jordon Stone's shot to give the Wildcats ahead.

A miscue by the Huskies pushed the Wildcat lead to 4-2. Guderian picked off a pass as USM was trying to get the puck out of its own end. He slung the puck to Ryan Sete and his wrist shot found the back of the net.

Wildcat netminder Mike Rockwell came up big in the third period to preserve the win. The sophomore stopped all 12 shots he faced and helped the Wildcats kill off a 5-on-3 penalty.
