PAWTUCKET, RI – Even though the Johnson & Wales University men's ice hockey team didn't pick up a victory on Friday, the Wildcats got a much-needed point. Johnson & Wales and New England College skated to a 3-3 tie in NEHC action.
New England College: 10-3-4, 5-3-4 NEHC
Johnson & Wales: 3-12-3, 1-7-2 NEHC
NEC: Anthony Pupplo (T, 8-3-4) 25 Saves
JWU: Mike Rockwell (T, 1-8-3) 26 Saves
Craig Hessenius (JWU): 2 Goals
Austin Withycombe (JWU): 1 Goal, 1 Assist
Adam Zollner (NEC): 1 Goal, 1 Assist
A big check broke one of the doors to the ice and delayed the game with 4:17 left in the first period. That breather gave the Wildcats new life as shortly thereafter Austin Withycombe kept the puck in the NEC end and he centered the pass to Craig Hessenius who's wrist shot found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1
Trailing 2-1 and down a man on the penalty kill, Hessenius knotted the game at 2-2 midway through the second period when he got the puck out of the JWU end and skated down for a breakaway goal by beating Anthony Pupplo top shelf. It's the first multi-goal game of his career.
JWU seized its first lead two minutes later when the puck came out of the corner to Withycombe and he skated in front of the net and blistered a slap shot past Pupplo. It was the first goal of his collegiate career.
The Pilgrims' Connor Fries redirected Nick Rein's slap shot from the point to tie the game at 3-3 with 8:16 left in the third period. Despite numerous chances on both ends in regulation and the extra period, neither team could break through for the winning goal.
The Wildcats are back at home on Saturday to host Southern Maine at 4:30 p.m.
