CHARLESTON, Mass. – Goals late in the first and second periods swung the NEHC contest Friday night between the Johnson & Wales University men's ice hockey team and Suffolk University. The Rams defeated the Wildcats, 6-2.
Suffolk: 6-9, 3-6 NEHC
Johnson & Wales: 3-11-2, 1-6-1 NEHC
SU: Michael Levine (W, 5-8) 34 Saves
JWU: Mike Rockwell (L, 1-8-2) 31 Saves
Logan Orem (JWU): 1 Goal
Anthony Scarcella (JWU): 1 Goal
Suffolk jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, but Logan Orem cut the margin in half when he scored just 12 seconds after the Rams' goal. Matt Bernot and Chad Guderian provided the assists. Orem has scored in his first two games as a Wildcat.
Jack Kelly scored the first of his two goals with just 28 seconds left in the first period.
The Wildcats took advantage of the power play 12:13 into the second period when Anthony Scarcella's goal cut the lead to 3-2.
Unfortunately, Billy Roche scored in the final minute of the second period to push the lead back to two goals. Suffolk added a pair of insurance goals in the third period.
Shots were nearly identical (37-36) but the Rams' Michael Levine came up with 34 saves compared to 31 by JWU netminder Mike Rockwell.
The two teams are back on the ice Saturday when they play at Lynch Arena in Pawtucket at 4 pm.
