PAWTUCKET, RI – The Johnson & Wales University men's ice hockey team cut into UMass Boston's lead in the second period, but the Beacons had too much firepower. The ninth-ranked Beacons scored late in the second period and early in the third to defeat the Wildcats, 5-2, on Friday.

It was nearly a scoreless first period, but UMass-Boston got a strike from Gabe Chuckran in the 18th minute of the opening stanza.
The Beacons found the back of the net twice in the first six minutes of the second period before the Wildcats broke through. Conor Cassidy took a cross-ice pass from Trevor Momot and scored his first goal as a Wildcat at the 14:53 mark.
UMass Boston scored a pair of insurance goals before JWU's Anthony Scarcella tallied his first goal of the year with two minutes left in the game.
The Beacons outshot the Wildcats, 40-27.
The Wildcats will battle back Saturday when they host Babson at 4 pm.
