Men's Ice Hockey Shutouts Curry 2-0
PAWTUCKET, RI – With the conference tournament starting on Saturday, the Johnson & Wales University men's hockey team has picked a good time to play some of its best hockey. The Wildcats wrapped up the regular season on Monday by defeating Curry, 2-0.
Curry: 14-9-2, 11-5-2 CCC
Johnson & Wales: 10-11-5, 6-9-3 CCC
JWU: Joey Ballmer - 32 saves, 0 goals
CC: Brett Sinclair - 22 saves, 2 goals
Since the start of 2017, the Wildcats have a 6-4-2 record compared to 6-6-1 last year after New Year's Day 2016.
Johnson & Wales picked up the first goal quickly. Freshman Kevin Divver (Seekonk, Mass.) stole the puck in the Curry end and beat goalie Brett Sinclair for his first collegiate goal.
After neither team scored in the second period, Johnson & Wales got an insurance goal with just five minutes left in the game. Ben Brouillard (Somerset, Mass.) put back the rebound of Nicholas Gray's (Stafford, Va.) shot for his seventh goal of the year.
The Colonels had a 32-24 advantage in shots but JWU goalie Joey Ballmer (Kalamazoo, Mich.) turned away all 32 shots he faced for his third shutout of the season. His Curry counterpart Sinclair stopped 22-of-24 shots. The Wildcats were 1-2 on the power play while the Colonels failed to score on their two power play opportunities.
Johnson & Wales now waits to find out its seeding and opponent for the upcoming CCC Tournament.
