CHARLESTOWN, Mass. – A back and forth game ended in a deadlock as the Johnson & Wales University men's ice hockey team came away with a tie at Suffolk on Saturday. Neither the Wildcats nor the Rams could break through for a goal in overtime as they tied 3-3.
Johnson & Wales: 9-11-5, 5-9-3 CCC
Suffolk: 7-12-5, 4-10-3 CCC
JWU: Joey Ballmer - 24 saves, 3 goals
SC: Will Ribas - 26 saves, 1 goal
The one point from the tie secured a playoff spot for the Wildcats. Seedings will be announced after the regular season wraps up on Tuesday.
Johnson & Wales jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period. Alan Boozer (Detroit, Mich.) struck for the first goal just four minutes into the first period then Zachary England (Redbank, NJ) scored his third goal of the season four minutes later.
The Rams took advantage of two second-period power play opportunities to tie the game. Connor Bates (Laconia, NH) got assists from Kevin McDonald (Ashburn, Va.) and Ben Brouillard (Somerset, Mass.) for his 11th goal of the year as JWU regained the lead at the 3:40 mark of the final period.
Suffolk got the equalizer with 6:21 left in regulation. The two teams only combined for five shots in overtime. JWU goalie Joey Ballmer (Kalamazoo, Mich.) made 24 saves as Johnson & Wales had a 32-27 advantage in shots. The Rams were 2-4 with the extra skater while the Wildcats were 0-4 on the power play.
The Wildcats wrap up the regular season on Monday when they play host to Curry at 3:45 p.m. The game was rescheduled from February 9 due to inclement weather.
