PAWTUCKET, RI – The Johnson & Wales University men's ice hockey team tried to fight back from a 3-1 deficit, but ran out of time. The Wildcats lost 3-2 at Nichols on Saturday.
Johnson & Wales: 9-11-2, 5-9-1 CCC
Nichols: 13-5-5, 10-2-4 CCC
JWU: Joey Ballmer -32 saves, 3 goals
NC: Colin Brennan - 28 saves, 2 goals
Johnson & Wales got on the board first when Fran Mackin (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored his team-leading 12th goal of the season. Ben Brouillard (Somerset, Mass.) and Connor Bates (Laconia, NH) provided the assists.
Unfortunately, the Bison countered with three-straight goals. The first two were within two minutes of each other in the first period and the third came 5:35 into the second stanza.
The Wildcats made it a one-goal game when Victor Carlsson (Kalmar, Sweden) scored a power play goal at the 12:27 mark off the pass from Nicholas Gray (Stafford, Va.). Neither team would score in the third period.
The Bison had a 35-30 advantage in shots. JWU goalie Joey Ballmer (Kalamazoo, Mich.) made 32 saves. JWU was 1-2 on the power play while Nichols could not convert any of its four opportunities.
Johnson & Wales is on the road Wednesday when it travels to Salve Regina for a 7:05 p.m. faceoff.
