Sophomore James Hyatt (Coral Springs, Fla.) scored his first collegiate goal to lift the Johnson & Wales University men's ice hockey team to a 2-0 shutout victory against SUNY Canton in a non-conference contest on Saturday evening at Lynch Arena/Blackstone Valley Sports Center.
After battling through nearly two scoreless periods, Hyatt put JWU on the board with just :30 left in the second stanza as he tallied what would prove to be the game-winner with assists to junior Josh Obregon (Omaha, Neb.) and sophomore Stefan Brucato (Lake Elsinore, Calif.). The Wildcats took the one goal lead heading into the locker room after two periods of play.
JWU added an insurance goal late in the third period as sophomore Fran Mackin (Philadelphia, Pa.) collected a loose puck and buried a shot into the back of the net to propel the Wildcats to the 2-0 victory. Junior Aaron Arm (Sarastoa, Fla.) and sophomore Ben Brouillard (Somerset, Mass.) were credited with assists on the play. JWU outshot SUNY Canton by a 30-23 margin in the victory.
Sophomore Joey Ballmer (Kalamazoo, Mich.) recorded his fourth career shutout with 23 saves in the win for Johnson & Wales while freshman Spencer Landry (New Hartford, N.Y.) tallied 28 stops in the loss for SUNY Canton.
With the victory Johnson & Wales improves to 6-5-1 on the season while SUNY Canton drops to 1-10-1 for the year. The Wildcats will return to action on Wednesday, January 7th when they host UMass Dartmouth in a non-conference contest at Lynch Arena/BVSC at 7:10 p.m.
