Men’s Ice Hockey Drops 5-3 Decision Against Buffalo State

The men's ice hockey team completed a weekend swing through upstate New York with a 5-3 setback against Buffalo State in a non-conference contest on Saturday afternoon at the Ice Arena.

Jason Zaleski (Scranton, Pa.) scored three times and Ryan Salkeld (Virginia Beach, Va.) tallied four points in the win for Buffalo State.

Salkeld opened the scoring with just over three minutes remaining in the opening period on a breakaway goal.  The Wildcats evened the score just 43 seconds later on a goal by sophomore Fran Macklin (Philadelphia, Pa.), but Zaleski's first of the game reclaimed the lead for Buffalo State with just 20 seconds remaining in the opening frame.

Salkeld gave the Bengals a 3-1 lead with his second of the game and fifth of the season on the power-play early in the second period, but the Wildcats answered again with a power-play tally of their own by junior Aaron Arm (Plantation, Fla.) from the point.  Zaleski's second of the game just under a minute later to push the lead to two again, but JWU closed the deficit to 4-3 late in the middle stanza off the stick of junior Josh Obregon (Omaha, Neb.).

Zaleski scored his third of the game on an empty net to seal the 5-3 victory for Buffalo State.

Sophomore Joey Ballmer (Kalamazoo, Mich.) notched 20 stops in the loss for JWU.

With the loss Johnson & Wales is now 5-5-1 on the season while Buffalo State improves to 3-6-2 on the season.  The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, January 3rd when they host SUNY Canton in a non-conference contest at Lynch Arena/BVSC at 4:45 p.m.
