Men’s Ice Hockey Knocks Off Assumption, 5-2

Sophomore Ben Brouillard (Somerset, Mass.) tallied a pair of goals and senior Brad Atkinson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) made 31 saves to lead the Johnson & Wales University men's ice hockey team to a 5-2 victory against Assumption in a non-conference contest at the Lynch Arena/BVSC on Tuesday evening.

Johnson & Wales took the 1-0 advantage midway through the first period when sophomore Brouillard collected a loose puck in front of the net and put a shot into the top shelf, glove side for the early lead.  The goal was the fourth of the season for Brouillard while senior Jason Healey (Goshen, N.Y.) and sophomore Stefan Brucato (Lake Elsinore, Calif.) earned assists on the play.  With just under three seconds left in the first stanza, Assumption knotted the game at 1-1 on senior Trevor Plante's (Blackstone, Mass.) fourth goal of the season, with assists to junior Alex Erban (Attleboro, Mass.) and senior Brennan Shaw (Presque Isle, Maine).

Freshman Alan Boozer (Detroit, Mich.) put JWU up 2-1 when he put in a rebounded shot to the lower corner of the net with 10:22 left in the second period.  Sophomore Fran Mackin (Philadelphia, Pa.) and sophomore James Hyatt (Coral Springs, Fla.) were credited with assists on the goal.  Assumption had the chance to tie the game with 2:08 left in the second, but senior Brad Atkinson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) made a successful save on a penalty shot to preserve the 2-1 lead for the Wildcats.  JWU took the one goal lead heading into the locker room after two periods, out shooting the visiting Greyhounds by a 25-17 margin after two periods of action.

Assumption was able to knot the game at 2-2 just 3:47 into the third period on the first collegiate goal for freshman Brian Farrell (Island Park, N.Y.).  JWU responded quickly, however as junior captain Cody Sarmiento (Sarasota, Fla.) tallied what would prove to be the game-winner at the 5:57 mark with assists to junior Aaron Arm (Plantation, Fla.) and junior Josh Obregon (Omaha, Neb.).  Brouillard's second goal of the game at the 8:44 mark of the period, this time with assists to Healey and sophomore Matt Lanzilotti (Chicago, Ill.) gave the Wildcats the two goal cushion with a 4-2 advantage.  Freshman Austin Donaldson (Calgary, Alberta) capped off the scoring for JWU, notching a breakaway goal with 2:26 left on the clock to seal the 5-2 victory.

Atkinson stopped 31 shots to earn his first win of the season for the Wildcats while junior Chris Hemhauser (Old Saybrook, Conn.) made 27 stops in the setback for Assumption.

With the win Johnson & Wales is now 5-2 for the season while Assumption falls to 1-6 for the season.  The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday-Sunday, November 29th-30th when they travel to the Skidmore Invitational.  JWU will take on Williams on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
