The men's ice hockey team suffered a 3-2 setback to Wentworth Institute of Technology in the ECAC Northeast opener on the road at Boston University's Walter Brown Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Leopards tallied the first goal of the game five minutes in when Kevin Crowe found the back of the net with assists to Jake Flynn and Jake Diamond. Wentworth extended the lead to 2-0 with six and a half minutes left in the first period when Stephen McManus netted a shot with assists from Diamond and Kyle Lebrun. WIT outshot the Wildcats in the first period 16-10.
The Wildcats cut the lead in half with under five minutes remaining in the second when freshman Luke Veitch (Lewis Center, Ohio) netted his second goal in as many games and first power play goal of the year. Senior Jason Healey (Goshen, N.Y.) and sophomore Drew Kariofiles (Cincinnati, Ohio) were given credit with the assists on the play bringing the score 2-1 in favor of the hosts. The momentum was stopped short as the Leopards scored on a power play goal of their own with just :17 seconds remaining the period. The Wildcats took 13 shots in the period and were 1-for-4 on the power play.
Sophomore Ben Brouillard (Somerset, Mass.) took a pass from classmate Fran Mackin (Philadelphia, Pa.) to cut the lead down to one with a little over eight minutes remaining in the contest. That would be as close as the Wildcats would get however, as Wentworth held on for the 3-2 victory.
Sophomore Joey Ballmer (Kalamazoo, Mich.) made 30 saves in net for the Wildcats while Alex Peck had 30 saves for Wentworth in the victory.
With the setback, JWU is now 1-1 on the year and 0-1 in conference play while Wentworth improves to 3-0 on the year and 1-0 in ECAC Northeast action. The Wildcats are back in action on Thursday November 13th when they will host Suffolk for an ECAC Northeast matchup at Lynch Arena beginning at 7:45 PM.
