SUTTON, Mass. – The Johnson & Wales University men's golf team is halfway to defending its conference title. The Wildcats are in first place after the opening 18 holes of the GNAC Championship, held at Blackstone National Golf Club.
Johnson & Wales fired an opening 308 to lead the field by seven strokes. Suffolk is in second with a 315 and UMass Dartmouth added a 319.
The Wildcats have four golfers in the top five, led by sophomore Claudio Soukamneuth with an opening 76 to stand alone in second place. Junior Alex Parente and sophomore Ryan Malloy are tied for third at 77. Matt Daley is only one stroke behind in fifth while Mac Patch posted a 14th-place 80.
The tournament concludes Sunday with the final 18 holes. The winning team receives the conference's automatic bid to the 2019 NCAA Championships, May 14-17 in Nicholasville, KY.
