JWU Men’s Golf in First Place After Day One of GNAC Championship

WARWICK, RI – The Johnson & Wales University men's golf team is in the lead through the opening 18 holes of the GNAC Championship. JWU has an 11-stroke advantage at the Valley Country Club.

Johnson & Wales posted an opening 297, its lowest round of the year. Host Rhode Island College is second at 308.

Sophomore Christian Maselli (Exeter, R.I.) sits atop the individual leaderboard with a three-under score of 69. Classmate Alex Parente (North Kingstown, R.I.) is a shot back with an opening 70. Rookies Claudio Soukamneuth (Cranston, R.I.) and Ryan Malloy (East Greenwich, RI) are tied for 15th after a 79. Adam Ely (Essex, Vt.) sits in 19th after his opening 80.

A win for JWU would be the program's first since 2009. Head coach Lou Parente led the Wildcats to four-straight titles.

The championship concludes with the final 18 holes on Sunday.
