CRANSTON, RI – The Johnson & Wales University men's golf team continued its trend of playing better the second day of a tournament. The host JWU fired a season-low of 315 to finish fifth at the JWU Wildcat Spring Invitational, hosted at the Cranston Country Club.
The Wildcats carded a two-day total of 636 (321-315). Western New England maintained its day-one lead to win the event with a two-day total of 612 (309-303). Owen Elliott from Tufts shot 74 in the final round to take medalist honors with a 36-hole 150 (76-74).
Rookie Christian Maselli (Exeter, RI) shot a 78 on the final day for a two-day total of 157, his lowest two-day score of the season to tie for 13th. Also cracking the top 20 was fellow rookie Alex Parente (North Kingstown, RI). He carded JWU's lowest round of the tournament with a 77 for a 36-hole total of 158 (81-77) to tie for 20th.
Senior Jon Nelson (Pembroke, Mass.) notched a pair of 80s to shoot 160 in the final tournament of his collegiate career. Sophomore Kyle Newcomb (Foxboro, Mass.) was a shot back after a 79 in the final round.
Senior Alan Ferrara (Pawtucket, RI) rounded out the JWU scores with a 161 (85-89). Playing as an individual, freshman Dawson Campbell (Newport, NH) had the biggest improvement of the tournament as he shaved 18 strokes from the first round to shoot 172 (95-77).
Johnson & Wales completes the season against Rhode Island College in The Cup, April 30 at the Valley Country Club.
