CRANSTON, RI – Soggy conditions didn't stop the Johnson & Wales University men's golf team from shooting its lowest round of the season. The host Wildcats carded a 321 and sit in sixth place after day one of the JWU Spring Invitational played at the Cranston Country Club.
Western New England is in the lead after 18 holes with a team total of 309. Babson is one stroke back. Mike Byrson from UMass Dartmouth and WNEU's Nicholas Shemkovitz share the individual lead with a 75.
Leading the way for the Wildcats was freshman Christian Maselli (Exeter, RI) as he tied his second-lowest round of the year with a 79. Senior Jon Nelson (Pembroke, Mass.) was next with an 80 and freshman Alex Parente (North Kingstown, RI) was a stroke back of him.
Kyle Newcomb (Foxboro, Mass.) was next with an opening-round 82. Senior Alan Ferrara (Pawtucket, RI) rounded out the JWU contingency with an 85. Freshman Dawson Campbell (Newport, NH) played as an individual and shot 95.
The final round gets underway at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.
