BREWSTER, Mass. – This fall the Johnson & Wales University men's golf team has proven to be a second-round team with vast improvement in the final 18 holes. That trend continued in the final event of the fall season as the Wildcats knocked off six shots in the final round of the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association Championship.
JWU shot 325 on the second day to card a 13th-place, 36-hole total of 656 (331-325). The Wildcats finished two shots behind St. Joseph's (ME) and Wentworth who tied for 11th. Babson won the event with a score of 617.
Leading the JWU contingency was rookie Alex Parente (North Kingston, RI). He fired a season-low score of 76, cutting four strokes off his opening round, to vault into a tie for 12th at 156 (80-76). Next on the team was senior Jon Nelson (Pembroke, Mass.) at 165 (81-84).
The biggest improvement of the tournament came from fellow senior Alan Ferrara (Pawtucket, RI) with an eight-stroke drop for a 36-hole total of 166 (87-79). Completing the JWU scoring was freshman Christian Maselli (Exeter, RI) at 169 (83-86) and senior Alec Carew (Jericho, Vt.) with a 175 (88-87).
Johnson & Wales will be back on the course during the spring portion of its season.
