Wildcats Finish Fifth at GNAC Championship

GORHAM, Maine – All season the Johnson & Wales University men's golf team has had one or two players go low, but not the entire team. On Sunday in the final round of the GNAC Championship it all clicked as the Wildcats fired their lowest round of the season to move up to fifth.

Johnson & Wales fired a 306 for a two-day total of 629 (323-306). The 306 was the second-lowest round of the day. The Wildcats finished seven strokes back of Worcester State. St. Joseph's (ME) won the event with a 607. Johnson & Wales hasn't had this good of a round since it shot 301 in opening round of the 2014 GNAC Championship.

Leading the team with a 10th place, 36-hole total of 163 (80-73) was senior Jon Nelson (Pembroke, Mass.). The only Wildcat to shoot two rounds in the 70s was senior Alan Ferrara (Pawtucket, RI) with scores of 77-78 to tie for 13th at 155.

Sophomore Kyle Newcomb (Foxboro, Mass.) fired his lowest round of the fall with a 76 to take 22nd at 159 (83-76). Freshmen Alex Parente (North Kingston, RI) and Christian Maselli (Exeter, RI) each shot 79 in the final 18 holes to post two-day scores of 162 (83-79) and 165 (86-79), respectively.

The Wildcats wrap up the fall campaign next weekend when they travel to the Captains Golf Club for the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association Championship.
