GORHAM, Maine – If Tuesday is any indication, Johnson & Wales University men's golfer Jon Nelson could be set up for a good showing at next week's GNAC Championship. The senior shot a season-low 76 to lead the Wildcats at the USM Invitational, hosted at the Gorham Country Club.
As a team, Johnson & Wales finished ninth with a two-day total of 490. The first round was cut short due to inclement weather. JWU was seven strokes back of St. Joseph's (ME). Husson won the event with a winning score of 449.
Nelson started the day tied for 16th, but jumped up nine spots to finish tied for fifth. Next on the team was Nelson's senior classmate Alan Ferrara (Pawtucket, RI) as he fired an 86 for a 27-hole total of 115 (86-39). Two strokes back was freshman Alex Parente (North Kingston, RI) at 125 (41-84). Fellow rookie Christian Maselli (Exeter, RI) followed with a 127 (41-86). Rounding out the JWU contingency was sophomore Kyle Newcomb (Foxboro, Mass.) at 130 (43-87).
The Wildcats are back at the Gorham Country Club on Saturday for the first round of the GNAC Championship.
