GORHAM, Maine – With the GNAC Championship less than a week away, the Johnson & Wales University men's golf team is getting a look at the championship course at the USM Invitational. Facing inclement weather that shortened the first round to nine holes, the Wildcats are in fourth with a day-one total of 158.
The Wildcats are only one shot back of third-place Bowdoin and a stroke ahead of fifth-place St. Joseph's (ME). Husson leads with a total of 145 and host Southern Maine is second at 150.
Senior Alan Ferrara (Pawtucket, RI) is in fifth place with a 37 and is only two strokes out of the lead. Classmate Jon Nelson (Pembroke, Mass.) is tied for 16th with a 39. Freshmen Alex Parente (North Kingston, RI) and Christian Maselli (Exeter, RI) shot identical rounds of 41. Finishing up the day one scores was sophomore Kyle Newcomb (Foxboro, Mass.) at 43.
The tournament concludes on Monday with the final 18 holes at 11 a.m.
