PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Needing a win to keep its hopes alive for a spot in the GNAC Tournament, the Johnson & Wales University men's basketball came through with a victory on Saturday. The Wildcats snapped a three-game losing streak with a 99-71 win over Rivier.
Rivier: 4-18, 1-8 GNAC
Johnson & Wales: 11-12, 3-6 GNAC
Bryan Davis (JWU): 27 points, 10 rebounds
John White (JWU): 21 points
Issaiah Chappell (RIV): 18 points, 6 rebounds
Bryan Davis' layup with 1:42 left in the first half staked the Wildcats to a 42-25 lead and they took a 43-30 advantage into the locker room.
Five minutes into the second half, a pair of Nesta Roberts free throws sliced the JWU margin to 46-39.
Four different players scored during a 23-7 run that was capped by eight-straight points from John White to push the JWU lead up to 66-45.
On Senior Day, it was a rookie that shinned as White came off the bench to score a season-high 21 points. Also notching a career-high game was Davis with 27 points to go along with 10 rebounds.
In his final home game, senior Brian Hogan-Gary and an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double.
Johnson & Wales shot 52.9 percent from the floor and was better from behind the arc at 56.5 percent (12-of-21). JWU also had a 46-30 rebounding advantage.
In the second half, Rivier senior Issaiah Chappell completed a three-point play to score the 1,000th point of his career. He led the Raiders with 18 points while Tyler Bradanese added 12 and Pharaoh David chipped in a baker's dozen.
JWU goes on the road Tuesday to face Lasell at 8 p.m.
