WALTHAM, Mass. – The Johnson & Wales University men's basketball team played lockdown defense the last three minutes to come away with a victory on Saturday. The Wildcats beat Regis, 60-56.
Regis: 8-12, 3-3
Johnson & Wales: 9-11, 4-2 GNAC
Justin Bullock (JWU): 18 points, 6 rebounds
Brian Hogan-Gary (JWU): 16 points, 15 rebounds
Donovian Maxfield (JWU): 11 points, 4 assists
Randall Ferdinand dropped in a layup midway through the first half to give the Wildcats a 19-10 lead. The Pride cut the lead to 26-22 with five minutes left, but JWU was able to take a 32-27 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, the Wildcats' lead grew to as many as nine, but Regis took a 53-52 lead on a pair of Devante Thompson free throws.
Out of a timeout with five minutes left, Donovian Maxfield knocked down a three-pointer to swing the lead back to JWU. The Wildcats only surrendered three more points the rest of the game.
Leading all scorer was Ferdinand as he tossed in 18 points. Brian Hogan-Gary had a 16-point, 15-rebound double-double. All 60 of the Wildcats' points came from their starters.
JWU is back on the road Thursday to take on Saint Joseph (Conn.) for the first time since the school added men's sports.
