PROVIDENCE, RI – The Johnson & Wales University men's basketball team never recovered from a slow start on Thursday night. The Wildcats dropped a 69-43 decision to 19th-ranked Wesleyan.

Wesleyan had the hot hand to start the game and the Wildcats were the exact opposite as the Cardinals jumped out to a 22-4 advantage midway through the first half on a pair of Antone Walker free throws. Johnson & Wales cut the lead to 12 on a Nate Patenaude (Smithfield, RI) jumper with two minutes left in the half. Wesleyan took a 32-18 lead into the locker room.
The visitors shot 49 percent (25-of-51) from the field while Johnson & Wales was limited to 30 percent (18-of-60), including 2-of-15 from behind the arc. Conversely, the Cardinals hit 47.4 percent (9-of-19) from three-point range.
Leading all scorers was Wesleyan's Austin Hutcherson with 21 points. JR Bascom, Antone Walker and Elijah Wilson all chipped in 10 points each.
The Wildcats get back into conference action on Saturday when they host Suffolk at 1 p.m.
