HAMPTON-SYDNEY, Va. – A last-second shot missed the mark as the Johnson & Wales University men's basketball team lost on Sunday. The Wildcats dropped an 85-82 decision to Hampton Sydney College during the Luck Stone Holiday Classic.
Johnson & Wales: 4-5
Johnson & Wales trailed by as many as nine in the second half, but fought back to tie the game on a Nate Patenaude (Smithfield, R.I.) three-pointer with 5:30 left. Brian Hogan-Gary (Staten Island, NY) made a layup with one minute remaining to give the Wildcats an 82-80 lead, but the Tigers scored the final five points for the victory.
Four Wildcats scored in double figures, led by Matt Madoian with a game-high 22 points to go along with five steals. Next was Justin Bullock (Spring Valley, NY) at 17 points while Hogan-Gary nearly had a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds.
The difference came at the free throw line where HSC was 23-of-31 while Johnson & Wales went 8-of-9. JWU made up for the discrepancy by making 10 three pointers.
Johnson & Wales will celebrate the end of 2017 when it travels to defending national champion Babson for a 2 p.m. game on December 31.
