Men’s Basketball Comeback Falls Short Against Pine Manor

PROVIDENCE, RI – Visiting Pine Manor College staved off a pair of second-half comeback attempts by the Johnson & Wales University men's basketball team. The Gators defeated the Wildcats, 69-67, on Thursday.

Pine Manor: 3-3
Johnson & Wales: 0-2

Statistical Leaders:
Brian Hogan-Gary: 23 points, 11 rebounds
Jarell Lawson: 15 points, 10 rebounds
Steven Collins (PMC): 24 points, 8 steals

Of Note:
Turnovers and poor shooting doomed the Wildcats. Johnson & Wales committed 25 miscues while shooting 36.1 percent (22-of-61) from the field and 20-of-32 (62.5 percent) at the free throw line.

AJ Bajana (Yonkers, NY) hit two free throws to tie the game, 17-17, with 7:46 left in the first half. Over the next five minutes, the Gators went on a 15-4 run and took a 41-31 lead into the locker room.

JWU chipped away at the deficit in the second half and took a 50-49 lead on a Randall Ferdinand (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) free throw at the 10:35 mark. Two Steven Collins free throws built PMC's lead back to 68-61 with 3:01 remaining. Brian Hogan-Gary (Staten Island, NY) scored six-straight points to get JWU within a basket, but the Wildcats' last-second shot missed the mark.

Hogan-Gary recorded his second double-double in a row with 23 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Jarell Lawson (Providence, RI) also had a double-double with 15 points and 10 boards. Ferdinand was the third Wildcat in double figures with 12 points.

Collins led all players with 24 points to go along with eight steals. The Gators recorded 18 steals. Jamel Hamans was next with 21 points.

The Wildcats open conference play on Saturday when they travel to Rivier for a 3 p.m. tipoff.
