NEWTON, Mass. –In its first action since the holiday break, the Johnson & Wales University men's basketball team dropped a 75-61 decision at Mount Ida on Thursday. The Mustangs outscored the Wildcats 40-30 in the second half to pull away for the victory.
Johnson & Wales: 2-8, 2-2 GNAC
Mount Ida: 7-4, 3-1 GNAC
An Elijah Lewis (Bridgeport, Conn.) layup to start the second half pulled the Wildcats within 35-33. During a two-and-a-half-minute stretch, the Mustangs built the lead to 50-37 on a pair of Harry Anderson free throws. JWU would only shrink the lead to eight points the rest of the way.
Three Wildcats scored in double figures, topped by Anthony Jernigan's (East Hartford, Conn.) game-high 23 points. He grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds and just missed a triple-double with seven assists. Matt Madoian (New Kingstown, RI) was next with 15 points and seven rebounds while Edson Dascy (Fall River, Mass.) added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Turnovers plagued JWU as it committed 18 miscues, which Mount Ida converted into 26 points. The Mustangs also had 40.6-to-35.5 advantage in shooting percentage and 22-4 margin in bench points.
The Wildcats will try to get back in the win column on Saturday when they play host to Norwich at 1 p.m.
