PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A strong second half with a pair of goals from Miele and Weaver, led field hockey to victory on Homecoming weekend. The Wildcats went on to beat Rivier University, 5-3.

Johnson & Wales got on the board first with a goal in the tenth minute of the game from Jillian Miele. Miele capitalized on a fast break run, dribbling past a defender and sending it into the back of the net. Almost eight minutes later, Rivier got on the board with a goal of their own from Hunter Langley, tying the score 1-1.
In the second quarter the Wildcats stepped up the offensive pressure, forcing multiple corner opportunities. In the 20th minute the Natalie Rivas sent a ball across the cage, and McKayla Weaver put it past the goalkeeper to find the back of the net. JWU took the lead 2-1. However with seconds left in the second quarter, Rivier's Carissa Letendre scored to tie the game, 2-2.
A strong second half from the Wildcats defense allowed them to hold off Rivier, while their offense went to work. Rachel Devore scored in the 42nd minute of the game, picking up a rebound from Rivas she slotted the ball in to the bottom left corner. Followed by another goal from Jillian Miele, as she slammed a ball into the net from a far out, cross-cage pass from Alaina Nardslico. Rivier added goal with less than five minutes left in the game, bringing the final score to 5-3.
Goalkeeper Grace Pendergast started the game, turning away three of the five shots she faced. While Madison Flaxington finished the game allowing only one goal. The Wildcats outshot the Raiders 20-14.
The Wildcats are back on the road Wednesday October 23 at 4 p.m. to facedown Albertus Magnus.
