NORTON, Mass. - The early firepower of the Wheaton Lyons was too much for the Johnson & Wales University field hockey team to overcome on Wednesday night. The Wildcats rallied with three second-half goals, but unfortunately, it was not enough to fully come back as they fell 5-3 to the Lyons.
Wheaton College: 2-6
Johnson & Wales: 1-8
Ellie Williams (WC): 1 goal
Jillian Miele (JWU): 1 goal
Wheaton got on the board early with a goal in the fifth minute of the game from Ellie Williams. Lauren Bartlett, Phoebe Seifert, and Elizabeth Helmreich added three more goals in the first ten minutes of the game to take the lead.
The Lyons led 4-0, until Johnson & Wales got on the board in the 33rd minute of the game with a goal from Kerrianne Fagan. In the 44th minute, on a corner play, Jillian Miele drove a ball from the top of the circle into the back of the net, from a pass from Natalie Rivas.
The Lyons added another goal to increase their lead to 5-2. The Wildcats added a goal from Rachel Devore in the 58th minute. However, the second half rally from the Wildcats was not enough to take the lead, falling 5-3 to Wheaton College.
The Lyons outshot the Wildcats 24 to 15. Goal keeper Grace Pendergast faced 11 shots and made six saves.
The Wildcats are back in action Saturday, September 28, at 1 p.m. at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex to face Colby-Sawyer.
