WESTFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore forward Jillian Miele buried two goals against Westfield State to lead the Wildcats to a 3-0 victory. Johnson & Wales field hockey earned its first win of the season.
Johnson & Wales: 1-4
Westfield State: 3-2
The first quarter of the game the Owls appeared to have the advantage, outshooting the Wildcats, 4-0. However, in the second quarter, the Wildcats fought back by turning strong defensive stops into counterattacks. This led to Jillian Miele scoring in the 19th minute of the game with an assist by Morgan LeDuc.
Throughout the game the Wildcats were able to keep the offensive pressure on, adding two more goals. First-year Mackenzie Wolf earned her first collegiate goal off a pass from Hailey Schneider at the 28 minute mark. For extra insurance, Miele added a fast break goal late in the fourth quarter to take the Wildcats to a 3-0 victory.
Goalkeeper Grace Pendergast (1-3) earned her first shut out of the season, turning away six shots on goal. Westfield State led in shots 15-12, while Johnson & Wales led in saves 8-7.
Johnson & Wales will look for another victory on Saturday, September 14 at 2:00 PM on the road against New England College.
