GORHAM, Maine – A strong second half for the Southern Maine Huskies was too much for the Johnson & Wales field hockey team to come back from. The Wildcats lost a 3-1 decision to the Huskies on Saturday.

In their first-ever meeting, Johnson & Wales and Southern Maine fought scoreless for the first two quarters, bringing the game to 0-0 at the half. Goalkeeper Grace Pendergast played a huge role in keeping the Huskies at bay, coming up with big saves and turning away 5 shots in the first two quarters.
Two minutes into the 3rd quarter Southern Maine got on the board with a goal from Maggie Redman, assisted by Samantha Ellis. The Wildcats responded with a fast-break goal from Jillian Miele, her first goal of the season.
Unfortunately, the Huskies scored once again at the end of the 3rd quarter to take the lead, 2-1. Southern Maine added another goal in the fourth to put the game out of reach.
First-year goalkeeper Madison Flaxington made her college debut, making 5 saves. The Huskies outshot the Wildcats 22-9.
The Wildcats are on the road Tuesday, September 3rd against Roger Williams at 4 p.m.
