Field Hockey Opens Season Strong, But Falls to Plymouth State

GORHAM, Maine. – The Johnson & Wales University field hockey opened their season Friday night under the lights against Plymouth State falling, 2-1.

Plymouth State: 1-0

Of Note:
From the start the game was evenly matched, remaining 0-0 through the first half. It wasn't until the 33rd minute of the game when Plymouth's Maddie Kabasakalian found the back of the net, off a pass from Kylie Ham. Plymouth scored again at the 50-minute mark when Jess Mezquita pushed the shot past the keeper.

The Wildcats fought back with first-year Hailey Schneider scoring her first collegiate goal. Schneider fired a beautiful shot from the top left and into the lower right corner of the cage. The Wildcats dominated the fourth quarter but ran out of time before getting the equalizer.   

Coach Zubretsky has confidence this is going to be a great season, commenting "this is the best showing to start the season in program history."


Plymouth State had an 11-8 advantage in shots. Returning junior goalkeeper Grace Pendergast had a strong start to the season, saving four of the six shots on goal.
