PROVIDENCE, RI – With the addition of seven first-year players and a strong core of returners the Johnson & Wales field hockey team look to improve on their strides from last season. The Wildcats will start their season on the road Friday, August 30th against Plymouth State at 6 p.m. During the 2018 season, the Wildcats recorded an overall record of 5-11 with a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) record of 3-4 and a GNAC first-round loss to Simmons University.
Johnson & Wales was tabbed to finish fifth in the preseason poll with 46 points, 10 points behind fourth-ranked Simmons University. 2018 GNAC Champions Saint Joseph's of Maine finished in first with 81 points, followed by second ranked Lasell with 72 points, third Colby-Sawyer with 57 and fourth Simmons with 56 points.
Head coach Jessica Zubretsky with be returning two of her top scorers, Sophomore Jillian Miele, leading with 29 points and Junior Rachel DeVore with 10 points. Additionally Coach Zubretsky has brought in seven first-year students that will make an impact on the field.
In the cage, the Wildcats are returning Senior Grace Pendergast who finished last season with a 69.4 save percentage. Additionally first-year Madison Flaxington from Lincoln, RI will join her in cage.
Johnson & Wales open conference action on September 21st when they travel to Anna Maria for a 10 a.m. contest. The Wildcats have a challenging non-conference schedule, on the road for seven out of their nine non-conference games.
