PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University field hockey team scored early and hung on for its first win of the year. The Wildcats defeated Westfield State Owls, 1-0, on Wednesday.

The first and only goal of the game was scored by Erin Esty in the first ten minutes. Esty was momentarily stopped on a breakaway by the goalkeeper. She picked up the ball off the clear attempt and ripped a hard shot from the top of the arch.
The Wildcats' defense shined, stopping 12 corner attempts. Freshman goalkeeper Grace Pendergast nabbed her first shutout and career win with 11 saves.
The Owls outshot the Wildcats, 25-15.
The Wildcats are on the road Saturday to take on Colby-Sawyer at 1 pm.
