PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University field hockey team opened their season with a 4-3 loss to cross-state rival Roger Williams on Saturday. The Hawks got the deciding goal in the final two minutes of regulation.

The Wildcats started the game with a goal in the first five minutes as sophomore Erin Esty found the back of the net for her first score as a Wildcat. Freshman Jillian Miele followed suit, scoring her first collegiate goal at the 14:35 mark to extend the JWU lead to 2-0. Roger Williams' Hannah Palmer cut the lead in half with a goal just four minutes before intermission.
Sydney McCarthy scored twice in the second half to give the Hawks a 3-2 lead. She tied the game with a score at the 38:27 mark then added another goal 10 minutes later. JWU's Rachel DeVore evened the game when she took the pass from Esty and pushed it into the goal. Unfortunately, Taylor Powell scored in the 68th minute to give the Hawks the victory.
Roger Williams had an 18-12 advantage in shots. In her first collegiate start, JWU sophomore goalkeeper Grace Pendergast made seven saves.
The Wildcats will host the Bridgewater State Bears on Monday at 3:30 p.m. All fans who check in with the CatPack Rewards app will be entered into a drawing for a Bluetooth Speaker.
