PROVIDENCE, RI – Mackenzie DeLaney tapped in a through ball four minutes into overtime to lift the Johnson & Wales University field hockey team to victory on Saturday. The Wildcats defeated Rivier, 3-2.
Rivier: 3-10, 0-6 GNAC
Johnson & Wales: 3-11, 2-4
The JWU victory, coupled with the Mount Ida win against Regis, moves the Wildcats into the fourth seed in the upcoming GNAC Tournament. The Wildcats will host Mount Ida in the first round on October 28.
It's the Wildcats' first overtime win since the 2013 season when Amanda Takach scored 20 seconds into the game to beat Wheelock, 3-2.
Every time Johnson & Wales got out to a lead, the Raiders had an answer. Just 1:35 into the game, Kaylyn Forest (Amherst, N.H.) got a pass from senior Giovanna Ciavardoni (Latham, N.Y.) and scored the first goal.
On Senior Day, Ciavardoni – the JWU all-time leader in goals, assists and points – found the back of the net. She took a through ball from fellow senior Shaina Thompson (Delmar, Del.) and shot it into the bottom corner.
The first Raider goal came eight minutes after Forest's tally when Linsey Roth scored on a one-timer. Two minutes after Ciavadoni put JWU up, 2-1, Roth scored again with a shot into the bottom left corner.
The Wildcats wrap up the regular season on Wednesday against Clark at 7 p.m.
