NEWTON, Mass. – One goal was all the Johnson & Wales University field hockey team needed to guarantee itself a home game during the GNAC Tournament. The Wildcats scored the only goal of the game in the 53rd minute as they defeated Lasell, 1-0, on Saturday.
Johnson & Wales: 6-8, 4-1 GNAC
Lasell: 9-6, 2-4 GNAC
With the victory, Johnson & Wales stayed in a three-way tie with Simmons and St. Joseph's (ME) for first place in the GNAC. JWU and Simmons face off next Saturday. A Wildcat victory gives the fourth-year program its first regular season GNAC Championship.
Neither team could put one home during the first half. The Lasers had a 6-2 advantage in shots during the first stanza. Eighteen minutes into the second half, Glenna Dunlop (West Milford, NJ) got the ball in front of the cage to Madeline Larson (Cantonsville, Md.) and she put it in for the only score of the day.
Lasell did everything it could to get the equalizer, but JWU goalkeeper Claire Nolan (West Bridgewater, Mass.) turned away both Lasell shots on goal in the final 16 minutes to preserve the shutout. Nolan made eight saves to get the first shutout of her collegiate career.
Johnson & Wales goes on the road to take on Springfield Thursday at 5 p.m. before the home finale against Simmons on Saturday.
