PORTSMOUTH, RI – The Johnson & Wales University IHSA equestrian team opened the 2020 spring season on Saturday. The Wildcats finished second at the show, co-hosted by Salve Regina University and Anna Maria College at Sandy Point Stables.
The hosts won the event with 35 points while the Wildcats and Roger Williams tied with 30 points. JWU moved up to third in the regional standings, just six points behind the leader RWU.
Leading the way was first-year Kiara Spadafore as she won both class 4 limited over fences and class 3 limited on flat in section A to earn High Point Rider of the day. Taking first place in class 3 limited on flat was fellow newcomer Kayleigh Thewissen. Rounding out the event winners was first-year Celia Kinneary with a win in class 2A pre-novice.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Arruda turned in a fourth-place performance in class 2B. Rounding out the JWU riders were sixth-place finishes from Heather Jarvis in intermediate on flat and Claire Farley in novice on flat.
