GALES FERRY, Conn. - The Johnson & Wales IHSA team traveled south for the University of Rhode Island show at Mystic Valley Hunt Club in Connecticut and saw their reign at the top of the region standings dwindle after a good show against some strong competition.
In Open Flat, Jennifer DePietro was one of four first place finishers for the Wildcats while she took home a second place ribbon in Open Fences. Her rides not only helped the team earn some crucial points on a difficult Saturday, but they kept her in the lead of the Cacchione Cup standings. Joining DePietro in the top of their class was Raquel Sousa in Novice Flat, who tied with teammate Ptolemy Tassone, and Celia Kinneary in the class 2A Novice Flat. Other runner-ups for JWU were Alanna Ryan, Kayleigh Thewissen, Alexa Dawley, Kaitlyn Arruda and Zoe-Mae Zuerner. Five Wildcats earned third place in their respective categories on Saturday including Thewissen, Katie Cassidy and Isabelle Slaughter.
The Wildcats are currently six points behind Roger Williams in the Zone 1 Region 1 standings heading into the weekend event at Assumption College.
Quote from Coach: "Our riders earned 4 first, 6 seconds and 5 thirds out of 29 classes. Many of our riders demonstrated good focus while competing for the first time. Strong performance by RWU and Brown have changed the team standings. With one more competition next week, our team has an opportunity to move back into first if everyone brings their best." - Head Coach Dirk Fogg
