LEEDES FERRY, Conn. – More spots in the Region 1 Finals were earned on Saturday by the Johnson & Wales University IHSA equestrian team. The Wildcats took part in the URI Spring Show at the Mystic Valley Hunt Club.
Senior Caitlyn Walker won a pair of events and punched her ticket to regionals. She earned High Point Rider of the Day and qualified for regionals in novice over fences. Walker started the day by winning intermediate on flat
In the first event, sophomore Jennifer DePietro got her spot in regionals by finishing third in open over fences. She followed that with a second-place finish in open on flat.
Katie Cassidy, Hannah Coutu and Erin Lavigne placed in a pair of events. Cassidy was second in intermediate on flat and sixth in novice over fences. Lavigne started the day with a third-place finish in intermediate over fence followed by a fourth-place ribbon in intermediate on flat. Coutu was sixth in both open on flat and intermediate over fences.
Seven different riders placed in novice on flat. Claire Farley and Cassandra Walker tied for second while Charlotte Benchoff took fourth. Raquel Sousa and Kaitlyn Arruda were second and third in advanced walk-trot-canter while sophomore Abby Bourque placed second in beginner walk-trot-canter.
Up next for JWU is the Region 1 Finals in Tiverton, RI, at the Nora Harris Equestrian Center.
