Wildcats Ride at Region 1 Community Show

LEEDES FERRY, Conn. – For the second day in a row, the Johnson & Wales University IHSA equestrian team was in competition. The Wildcats took part in the Region 1 Community Show at the Mystic Valley Hunt Club.

For the second-straight day, sophomore Jennifer DePietro won the open on flat competition. She added a fifth-place showing in open over fences.

Another blue ribbon was won by Erin Lavigne in intermediate on flat. JWU had three top-five finishes in the event as Sophia Johnston was second and Alanna Ryan took fifth. Johnston was sixth in intermediate over fences while Ryan took fifth in novice over fences.

The third first-place finish was in advanced walk-trot-canter. Freshman Kaitlyn Arruda won the event and Raquel Sousa was second.

Senior Hannah Coutu was in the top-five of two competitions. She took third in open on flat and fifth in intermediate over fences.

JWU had a trio of fourth-place finishes in the fences competitions. Junior Heather Jarvis took part in open over fences, Lavigne was in intermediate over fences and Caitlyn Walker rode in novice over fences.

Four riders placed in novice on flat. Claire Farley was third in the event while Kelsey Barker, Charlotte Benchoff and Katie Cassidy tied for sixth. Cassidy earned a spot in the Region 1 finals.

Wrapping up the JWU place winners was Abby Bourque with a third-place showing in beginner walk-trot-canter.

The Wildcats have one more shot to qualify for regionals at the URI spring show at the Mystic Valley Hunt Club.
