NORTH OXFORD, Mass. – The Johnson & Wales University IHSA equestrian team wrapped up the fall portion of the 2018-19 schedule on Saturday. The Wildcats placed fifth with 29 points at the Assumption College show held at the Four Wind Farm.
Roger Williams won the competition at 35 points, followed closely by UMass Dartmouth with 34.
At the end of the fall season, the Wildcats are in fifth in the team standings at 170 points. JWU is seven points back of Roger Williams and nine back of the University of Rhode Island. Brown leads with 184 points.
Johnson & Wales had a pair of riders qualify for the Region 1 Finals with their performance at Assumption. Heather Jarvis won her flight of intermediate over fences to earn her spot. She also took third in novice on flat.
Sophomore Jennifer DePietro qualified in intermediate on flat thanks to a second-place showing. She added a fourth-place ride in open over fences.
Junior Sophia Johnston notched two top-five rides. She was second in intermediate over fences and fifth in her division of intermediate on flat. Senior Caitlyn Walker had a pair of top-five rides with a third-place in intermediate on flat and novice over fences.
Open on flat produced two top-three finishes as Hannah Coutu took the red ribbon and Bryce Hall claimed the white third-place ribbon. Kristin Bernard was second in her division of advanced walk trot canter while Cassandra Walker took fifth in her flight. Also getting top-five ribbons were Kelsey Barker (fourth) and Charlotte Benchoff (fifth) in novice on flat.
Johnson & Wales resumes its schedule in March with an eye on the regional finals as well as the IHSA National Championships, May 2-5, in Syracuse, NY.
