WINTHROP, Mass. – When the Johnson & Wales University baseball team has needed to bounce back from a loss, senior pitcher James Smiegocki has been there for the Wildcats. He picked up a big win over the weekend and earned GNAC Pitcher of the Week as announced by the league office.
It's the second time in his career that the Lambertville, NJ native has earned the award. He picked up his first honor on March 12, 2018. Lasell's David Marsell was named Player of the Week and Elijah Spataj from Albertus Magnus collected Rookie of the Week.
While he only pitched once last week, Smiegocki came up big. He gave up one run with seven strikeouts to get the victory over Suffolk in game two on Saturday. The win snapped JWU's five-game slide against the Rams and ended Suffolk's 18-game GNAC winning streak. Currently, Smiegocki ranks second in the GNAC with 41 strikeouts and fifth with a 3.40 earned run average.
JWU is back on the field Wednesday when it hosts Roger Williams at 4 pm. The game was originally scheduled for Monday, April 22, but had to be moved to make up Sunday's postponed GNAC series at Albertus Magus.
