PROVIDENCE, RI – The Johnson & Wales University baseball team set the tone early and often at the plate in Thursday's non-conference game against Wentworth. The Wildcats scored at least four runs in each of the first four innings on their way to a 20-7 defeat of the Leopards.
Johnson & Wales: 10-4
The 20 runs are the most the Wildcats have scored since tacking 27 on Anna Maria during the first round of the GNAC Tournament on May 2, 2018.
Aidan Hagarty did a lot of the damage in the first two innings. He had a two-run double in the first then belted a two-run home run in the second.
JWU broke the game open with six runs in the fourth inning. Bryan Bessler got the scoring started with an RBI single to score Rich Bourdeau and Nick Lloyd. Lloyd wrapped up the scoring with a two-run double to plate Steve Rocchio and Adam Diehl.
The Leopards cut into the Wildcats' lead with five runs in the top of the seventh inning. Craig Rich and Matt Bishop each had two-run doubles, but Wentworth could not extend the game.
Sophomore Jake Hernandez worked the first five innings to pick up his first collegiate victory. He gave up two runs on four hits with six strikeouts.
JWU gets back into conference action Saturday when it hosts Saint Joseph's (Me) for a 1 pm doubleheader.
