Strong Pitching Leads Wildcats to Sweep of Raiders

PROVIDENCE, RI – The Johnson & Wales University bullpen was a lonely place on Sunday afternoon. Josh Mousseau and James Smiegocki each threw a complete game as the Wildcats defeated Rivier University, 7-1, in the opener and 8-1 in the nightcap.

Rivier: 3-11, 0-2 GNAC
Johnson & Wales: 9-3, 2-0 GNAC

Statistical Leaders:
Colby Greenhalgh (JWU): 2-3, 1 R, 1 RBI (GM 1); 1-2, 2 R, 1 RBI (GM 2)
Joe Maracic (JWU) 2-2 2 RBI (GM 1)
Tim Lombardi (JWU): 2-2, 2 R, 1 RBI (GM 1)

Of Note:
Johnson & Wales picked up four runs in the bottom of the first inning of game one. Aidan Hagarty's looping single to left field scored Vin Amalfitano then Armani Henderson crossed the plate on a throwing error.

Joe Maracic drove in his second run of the game in the bottom of the third with a single to plate Tim Lombardi, who led off the inning with a double.

That was more than enough offense for Mousseau. He threw the first complete game of his collegiate career, striking out a personal-best 11 batters while only surrendering an unearned run.

JWU struck for three runs in the first inning of game two with only one hit. Colby Greenhalgh, Lombardi and Adam Diehl all drew free passes. Raimiel Rodriguez roped a double to the right field gap to score a pair of runs.

Greenhalgh delivered an RBI double in the second to score Anthony Roman then came around to score himself on a ground out.

Not to be outdone, Smiegocki only surrendered a pair of hits with eight strikeouts. Following a leadoff single in the fourth, he retired the next 10 batters.
