MYRTLE BEACH, SC – A day after nearly sweeping a doubleheader, the Johnson & Wales University baseball team got it done Thursday. On day two of their spring break trip, the Wildcats took game one from Manchester University, 7-1, then downed the Spartans, 8-1, in the nightcap.
Johnson & Wales: 3-1.
Colby Greenhalgh (JWU): 2-5, 1 R, 1 RBI (GM 1) / 3-3, 2 R, 3 RBI (GM 2)
Josh Mousseau (JWU): 8 IP, 8 K, 2 H
Raimiel Rodriguez (JWU): 3-5, 2 RBI (GM 2)
James Smiegocki (JWU): 6.2 IP, 3 K
An inning later, Colby Greenhalgh belted a solo home run.
The Spartans got a run back in the seventh, but the Wildcats took away the notion of a comeback with a five-run eighth inning. The big blow was a two-run triple by Steve Rocchio that scored Vin Amalfitano and Duffy.
Senior Josh Mousseau had one of the best outings of his career, giving up just one run on two hits with eight strikeouts in eight innings of work.
In game two, Greenhalgh factored into the first four runs as JWU jumped out to a 5-1 lead. In the first, he scored on a Raimiel Rodriguez double then plated Joe Maracic in the second. His two-run double in the fourth scored Rich Bourdeau and Nick Lloyd.
That was more than enough run support for starting pitcher James Smiegocki. He only surrendered one run – a solo home run in the fourth – over 6.2 innings with three strikeouts.
JWU is back on the field Friday to take on Lehman at 2:30 p.m.
