Anchormen Outslug Wildcats 9-6

PROVIDENCE, RI – The hits were ample at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletics Complex on Thursday between the Johnson & Wales University baseball team and Rhode Island College. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, the Anchormen came up with more timely hits as they defeated JWU, 9-6.

Rhode Island College: 12-9
Johnson & Wales: 11-10

Of Note:
The Anchormen chipped away at JWU starting pitcher Ryan Depatie (Pawtucket, RI) for four runs in the second inning. RIC produced five hits during the frame, including a two-run single by Austin Berry. Berry struck again for another two-run single that pushed the Anchormen's lead to 6-4.

Dave Matthews (Newtown, Conn.) got the Wildcats on the board in the third when he roped a two-run double. Edison Mercado's (Providence, RI) single plated Matthews. Greg Joubert (Cumberland, RI) and Lou Umberto (Cranston, RI) each drove in a run in the sixth as the Wildcats cut the lead to 7-5.

The Anchormen took a 9-6 lead into the ninth inning, but the Wildcats quickly had two runners aboard. Erry Baldayac worked out of the jam to get his first save of the season. Riley Miller worked the middle three innings to pick up his first win of the year. Depatie was saddle with the loss.

The two teams combined for 29 hits with 12 different players picking up two. Barry and Mike Webb had three hits apiece for RIC. Matthews went 3-of-5 for JWU with a pair of RBIs and a run scored.
