Trina Capezza and
Madison Sanborn joined juniors
Angelina Oliveira,
Emily DeRoehn, and freshman
Sophia Warburton have been named to the
United Soccer Coaches (USC) Women's Soccer All-Region Teams. DeRoehn and Capezza each earned a spot on the First Team while Sanborn, Oliveira, and Warburton were selected to the third team.
DeRoehn tied for second in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) in goals (12) and placed fourth with 27 points. Named GNAC Defensive Player of the Year and to the GNAC First Team for the second-consecutive season, DeRoehn scored two goals in three matches this season – Anna Maria (Sept. 23), Albertus Magnus (Oct. 24), and the GNAC Semifinals against Colby-Sawyer (Nov. 1) – and was named to the GNAC All-Tournament Team.
Capezza started all 24 games in the midfield for head coach
Chris Flint and racked up five points (2-1-5). She collected goals against Regis (MA) on Sept. 13 and against Mitchell on Sept. 27, and played all 90 minutes in a 2-1 win over Emmanuel (MA) in the conference championship match. Capezza was named to the GNAC First Team for the third-consecutive season in 2023.
The GNAC Rookie of the Year and First Team pick, Warburton's 10 goals tied for the fourth-highest mark in the GNAC, and her 28 points was third in the conference. She netted three game-winning goals this season and racked up four points (2-2-4) in three GNAC Tournament matches.
Sanborn scored six goals in 24 matches, including the first two goals of the season for the Wildcats to help them earn draws against Babson (Sept. 1) and WestConn (Sept. 3). Named to the GNAC First Team, she later scored the GWG against Emmanuel (MA) (Oct. 7) and New England Col. (Oct. 14).
Oliveira – who garnered GNAC First Team honors in 2022 and Second Team in 2023 – tied for DeRoehn for the team lead in goals with 12 and led the GNAC with six game-winners. She scored two goals on four occasions this season – Elms (Sept. 9), St. Joseph's (ME) (Sept. 20), Colby-Sawyer (Sept. 30), and Rivier (Oct. 21) – and scored the GWG into the semifinals against the Chargers.
A total of15 student-athletes from the 10 GNAC institutions which sponsor women's soccer were named to the team. JWU and Emmanuel (MA) tied for the lead with five, followed by Lasell and Colby-Sawyer with two each, and Regis (MA) with one.
The Wildcats finished the 2023 campaign with 18 wins, their fourth-straight GNAC Championship, and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
