There's a new crop of fitness classes available for students this term and we wanted to share some information about the instructors that are running each of these three classes. All three offerings are by SIGN-UP only so please be sure to sign up before heading to any of the classes.
Our first class, on Monday nights at 5pm in Delaney Gym, is Yoga. Tami Killam will teach this one hour class that will also be available to stream at home via portal.stretchinternet.com/jwuri.
Tami Killam is a Yoga Teacher, Reiki Master Teacher, Meditation Teacher, and a trained Yoga for Cancer Teacher. Tami is a mother of four children who has a passion for Yoga, martial arts, healthy eating, energy work, and mindful living. Tami started her Yoga journey after coming down with an illness. She embarked on a journey to heal herself and find balance within her life while living with a chronic illness. Tami has learned and worked with many practitioners and found a therapist that changed her life's course. Tami realized that practicing Yoga helped to control the pain and symptoms from her illness. Since that time Tami has immersed herself in a life's journey of healing through the practice of Yoga.
Tami has completed a 200-hour Yoga Alliance at the Wild Wisdom Yoga, and a 2nd 200-hour Yoga Alliance through the Deep River School. Tami continued her education by completing a 300-hour, and 500-hour Yoga training, Tami is also certified as a Reiki I, II, and Reiki Master. Further rounding out her knowledge Tami is a certified Meditation Teacher through the Soul Space Meditation in Canton MA. Finally, Tami completed a 45-hour Yoga for Cancer training at Kripalu. Tami has dedicated her life to empowering others with the health benefits of the combination of Yoga, Reiki & Meditation.
Our Tuesday night offering is a Spin class that will run from 6-7p in Delaney Gym taught by Lea Slaughter.
Lea has been a Group Fitness Instructor for over 25 years and Spin Instructor since 2012. Her favorite formats to teach include Spin, Total Body Conditioning, HIIT and Restorative Stretch. She holds numerous Group Fitness Certifications through AFAA, Mad Dogg Spinning, Russian Kettlebell Concepts and is AED/CPR certified.
Outside of work, she can be found enjoying life with her husband, friends and family, traveling and exploring much of the culinary and local culture of the countries she visits.
Our third offering this term is a Circuit Training class on Wednesday nights at 5pm. Our very own Coordinator of Fitness and Recreation, Carlo Acquisto, will take the lead bringing this class to you each week.
For nearly 20 years Acquisto has been a staple on the Johnson & Wales University campus. He oversees the university campus fitness & recreation program while also serving as a strength and conditioning coach for the athletics department.
As the department's strength and conditioning coach, Acquisto plans, develops, implements and monitors sport-specific training that is focused on increasing athletic performance all the while keeping injury prevention in the forefront. He is a 20-year member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and earned his Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist credential in 1999.
In addition, he manages JWU's fitness centers in the Wildcat Center and Wales Hall, including a staff of over 40 employees. Acquisto oversees the university's group fitness and recreation programs.
A Rhode Island native, he earned a bachelor of science degree in exercise physiology from the University of Rhode Island. Acquisto is currently enrolled in the Johnson & Wales MBA program with a concentration in sports leadership.
