Providence, RI – On the heals of the winter sport cancellation announcment made by the The Great Northeast Athletic Conference, JWU has cancelled all winter sport competitive seasons. This includes wrestling, men's and women's ice hockey and men's and women's basketball.
With the health and well-being of students and staff as the highest priority, each GNAC institution may plan for student-athlete training, conditioning opportunities, and non-conference competition consistent with federal and state public health recommendations, the NCAA, and institutional guidelines. GNAC sponsored championships for these sports will not take place. The GNAC Presidents' Council has not yet made a determination on the status of spring sports. It will continue to meet regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, as all options will be thoroughly evaluated to make an informed decision based on both federal and state health and safety guidelines.
"The decision to cancel winter sports, although difficult, is necessary to minimize the risks associated with COVID-19 and maintain the health and safety of our student-athletes and campus community," says Athletic Director Dana Garfield. "We believe that intercollegiate athletics is an essential part of the overall collegiate experience and are committed to providing athletic engagement in a safe and structured environment. Additionally, we will be working with the GNAC President's Council to explore and evaluate all options related to the status of spring sports."
