WINTHROP, Mass. – The Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) will postpone conference athletic competitions for Fall sports for the upcoming semester conference commissioner Joe Walsh announced on Monday. Over the last several months, the GNAC Presidents' Council has met regarding the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and to plan for the 2020-21 athletic season.
During the fall, each GNAC institution may plan for student-athlete training and conditioning opportunities consistent with federal and state public health recommendations, the NCAA, and institutional guidelines. Johnson & Wales is committed to working with the GNAC and NCAA to providing additional opportunities for student-athletes during the spring semester.
The GNAC Presidents' Council has not yet made a determination on the status of winter sports. All options will be thoroughly evaluated to make a decision as quickly as possible, informed by federal and state health and safety guidelines.
For Johnson & Wales the affected GNAC sports are men's & women's cross country, field hockey, men's golf, men's & women's soccer, men's & women's tennis and women's volleyball. In addition, women's golf, women's rowing, IDA equestrian and IHSA equestrian, which do not compete in the GNAC, will not take place in the fall.
The health and safety of JWU student-athletes, coaches and staff is the department's top priority. While it may not be a traditional fall season, Johnson & Wales is developing an academic and athletic experience that is as safe and comprehensive as possible. More specifics about fall sports activity will be released at a later date.
