This week in Johnson & Wales University Athletics History features the 2013 men's volleyball team. On April 9, 2013, Johnson & Wales hosted the Lasell College Lasers at the Wildcat Center. This GNAC semifinal match went five sets and the Wildcats came out on top thanks to Shawn Kennedy '14 and JJ Bessette '15. Kennedy led the Wildcats with 24 kills, 10 digs and five blocks, while Bessette generated 52 assists and three blocks in the five-set thriller.
In the midst of an eight-game winning streak, the 2011 JWU baseball team faced a prime time GNAC opponent in the Saint Joseph's College of Maine Monks on April 10, 2011 at Pierce Field in East Providence, RI. The Wildcats got the upper hand as Nick Marine '11 threw six innings, scattered eight hits and struck out two, while Teddy Katz '11 went 3-for-4 from the plate with three runs batted in. The 5 -2 victory pushed JWU's winning streak to nine games en route to an 11-3 conference record.
On April 8, 2015, the JWU women's lacrosse team hosted Simmons College for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference matchup. The double overtime affair featured matching 8-7 halves with Gabrielle Vasile finding the back of the net with one second left in regulation to force overtime. Vasile scored again with the eventual game-winner at the 2:12 mark of the second OT. When it was all settled, Lydia Knapp – who was later named GNAC Player of the Year - had eight goals and three assists while Raquel Pederzani added four goals.
The final installment of this Week in Wildcat History highlights the Johnson & Wales University Cheerleading Team. On April 6, 2019, the JWU Cheerleading team competed on the final day of the NCA/NDA College Nationals in Daytona Beach, Florida. The Wildcats would finish fifth in their first national competition with scores of 91.87 and 92.40, only three points behind the third place crew.
